AI agents, simply explained
What an AI agent does, and what it does not. Here is a preview of the guide, without jargon.
01What an AI agent is
An AI assistant answers a request. An AI agent receives a goal, chooses the steps itself and uses tools to reach it: checking a calendar, searching your documents, preparing an email. For many small business needs, a simple automation remains more predictable.
Mini example
A client writes to move their Thursday appointment. The agent finds the appointment, offers two time slots, then confirms the change. If the client seems unhappy, it passes the conversation to a person.
02What it does not do
An agent can be confidently wrong, it only knows what you give it, and the responsibility stays with the business. Anything involving money, a commitment or a sensitive relationship stays a human decision: the agent prepares, the person decides.
03Framing an agent from the start
- Write its instructions: its role, the sources it may use, what it must never promise.
- Limit its access to the tools it needs, read rather than write at first.
- Plan human review on important actions.
